Meeting Notes – 09 Mar 2011

The planned Guest Speaker could not attend and PP George Booth. gave a most interesting talk on the challenges of arranging and conducting tours for people with disabilities. In particular people with sight impairment. Among the issues he addressed were:

  • Access to buildings particularly in Asia
  • The challenges of trying to arrange tours for people with guide dogs in countries where dogs are not accepted in public places (e.g. Singapore)
  • The changes that tourist guides need to make to their presentations when conducting these tours. For example if a blind group is involved don’t say look on the left or right or refer to visual indicators.

A most interesting talk which gave us a better understanding of the issues associated with these tours and the benefits that they are having to both the participants and the visiting countries. Thank you George for stepping in on short notice.
